Together, Andrea, the Good Life Juice customers and I have experienced great success from consuming collagen. Given the positive feedback, I started researching collagen loading. I have to say, I’m pretty excited to give it a go over the next 30 days.
Collagen loading is a recent concept developed by Dr. Josh Axe.
Essentially - the thought behind this concept is to replenish your collagen stores, so that you can experience the benefits of collagen at it’s recommended daily dose. You consume a collagen rich substance - 3 times a day for 30 days.
What is collagen?
Collagen is a structural protein – meaning its most basic structure is amino acids that build tissue.
Specifically, connective tissues.
Sounds important, right? It’s actually VITAL.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals, making 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content.
It’s well known that collagen is a major building block of healthy skin, nails and hair - but do you know that it also is vital for gut health (our intestines are made of connective tissue), joint and muscle health, muscle mass (gainz bro), energy production, optimally performing cardiovascular health, teeth strength, metabolism AND liver function?!?
Collagen is essential for optimal health.
Foods that are high in collagen are things like bones, fish skin, chicken skin and organ meats – meaning the standard North American diet, is typically VOID of all collagen containing proteins. And unfortunately, recent studies suggest that, while helpful, the recommended suggested serving of collagen in your smoothie, may not be replenishing our depleted stores of collagen.
Other factors that may be contributing to our depleted collagen stores are -
Diets high in sugar
Smoking
Sun exposure
Nutritional deficiencies
Digestive problems (like leaky gut or dysbiosis)
What are some collagen rich substances you can consume?!
Bone broth is extremely rich in collagen, easily absorbable minerals and vitamins like iron and calcium, vitamin D and K2 and is very gentle on the body and easy to digest. Consuming bone broth once or twice a day during your collagen loading month is a fantastic idea. Bone broth also contains glutathione precursors, which our bodies use to create glutathione which is our bodies natural defense against free radicals.
Powdered collagen in your bulletproof coffee, in a smoothie or just straight up in some H20 (with a squeeze of lemon is amazing), is another fantastic way of consuming collagen throughout the day.
Starting your day with collagen in a bullet proof coffee or your water. Having a smoothie with collagen powder and other great superfoods with your lunch. A cup of steaming hot bone broth in the evening before bed, would be a great example of variety and something I plan on doing for the next 30 days.
